Schlotsky's, Hampton
UPDATED! Tuesday, 9/24/2002
I haven't been to Schlotsky's in about a month, and before that I hadn't been in over a month, I think. Considering the glowing review I gave it last year, you may be wondering, "If they know I'm a 'Mister So-and-so', why do spammers send me ads for feminine hygiene products?" Oh, well, maybe not that. But I used to really like Schlotsky's and it seems to have gone downhill, but I couldn't quite figure out why. I think I know:

Onions.

Schlotsky's always used sweet onions... Vidalia, I guess. But recently they've been using dreadfully bitter ones--even worse than the ones at Wendy's, if that's possible. It ruins the sandwich. It actually reminds me of compost. That's what it's like, eating compost. The past couple times I couldn't even finish eating it, I was so repulsed.

OK, maybe I'm hyper-onion-sensitive. The tea is usually good. I haven't tried their chicken sandwiches but once and I've never tried their pizza. (sigh) Maybe I'll give 'em another chance. :)

Another late arrival... we got there around 8:15. "That doesn't sound very late," you may be thinking. But when they close at 9, it can be. I'll explain later.

What's Good?
Recommendation: The Roast Beef & Cheese on Dark Rye bread. It's good enough that I always get it. The sandwiches here are generously-sized, with lots of meat. The bread is awesome. The onions are sweet, unlike the horrid tripe they put on Wendy's burgers. The tomato and pickle have always been good. I did get bum lettuce one time (wilted). The mild horseradish sauce, in packets next to the drink machines, is a necessity. At least it is for me... roast beef can be pretty bland sometimes, as you may know.
Schlotsky's is one of the few places I can depend on to have good sweetened iced tea. Not too strong, and sweet enough. That's hard to find around here. If a restaurant even has sweet tea, there's a 50/50 chance it will only be mildly sweet. Bleh. They've not had any twice--once when the machine was broken, and another time when they were out of tea. Grrr.
Very good selection, although I've been lax in trying different things. I've gotten the reuben once, which was good, but every other time I've gotten the Roast Beef & Cheese.

What's Bad?
The bread is a major selling point, but if you squeeze yourself in between rush hours, you run the risk of getting somewhat stale bread. Or maybe they just aren't handling it right. At any rate, I've gotten some less-than-oven-fresh bread a couple times--that was a let down, but a relatively minor one.
For the cost, the decor is a little austere. Functional, and little past that.
The store is small, and can get pretty crowded during the lunch rush. I've never had to wait for a seat though.
Don't be late. A few minutes before 9 they start performing close-down domestic chores: cleaning, shutting down the soda machine, removing the iced tea kettles. This is a little unsettling if you're trying to relax. Most restaurants I've been in are pretty laid-back about closing-time; not Schlotsky's. They make is tacitly clear it's time to move on out so they can go home!

What's Cool?
Schlotsky's recently went to all-non-smoking, which is pretty smart considering how small the store is. :)
