Steve's Steakhouse, Jefferson Ave., Newport News
Wednesday, February 20, 2002
My mom had eaten here earlier with a friend and she liked it, and I was in the mood to try something new. I was pretty sure I had never been there before. With hindsight, I'm sure I would have remembered!

What's Good?
The bread they serve you is OK, though so "white" as to be insubstantial. The dining room is spacious, so you could seat a fairly large party easily, I think. It wasn't crowded when we went, but it was late in the evening.

What's Bad?
Most of my experience at Steve's was bad. I got an 8 oz. steak, which I had asked be prepared medium but was well-done, and utterly flavorless, with lots of non-meat tissue attached to it. It took too much work removing the meat bits from the steak-like mass. I hate food that requires a lot of work. The fries were too stringy and greasy, with lots of burned places on them. They didn't have sweet iced tea, so I got a Coke, which the waittress was very lackadaisical in refilling. She was not very friendly and talked back to me at one point. The salad, which my mom said she had really enjoyed when she was last there, was mostly forgettable, and the dressing was way too rich. It completely overpowered the salad. Heck, for all I know that may have been a good thing.

What's Cool?
There's a neat stone fountain just inside the front door on one side, and a small piano on the other.

Rating: 3/9 -- Bad
