What does THIS SIGN mean?

Do you know what this sign means? I believe most drivers do not. Or at least, most drivers believe the OPPOSITE of this sign.
This is a MERGE LEFT sign. This means two things:

  • The lane on the right is ending
  • If you are in the right lane, you need to merge into the left lane as soon as it is safe, but preferably before the lane ends.
  • I have driven in many states (Virginia, Maryland, DC{I know, not a state}, North Carolina, Tennessee, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, West Virginia). From my 20 years in driving (and at least 350,000 miles), I have found that, in practice, I have to take this sign to mean: If you are in the left lane, the guy on the right is going to just drive into the side of your car unless you do something
Recently, near my home, I have witnessed twice, in the same week, people in the LEFT lane merging into the RIGHT lane under a MERGE LEFT sign.
So I urge all drivers, to please, review your road signs. You aren't going to get those nice translations of what they mean under them anymore since road signs cost a million dollars per square inch to produce.

    Thank you
